Catalytic Converter Theft

On Weds 28th Jan there was a report of a theft of a catalytic converter from a vehicle (BMW 116i) on BERRYLANDS ROAD, the first theft of this type in Berrylands for several years. There was a similar theft that day in Kingston. For that reason, we’d like to bring this to your attention. Catalytic converter theft can take just minutes and leave victims with a hefty repair bill.

Catalytic converters sit underneath vehicles and contain valuable precious metals. Thieves can remove them quickly and sell them on, which is why this type of crime continues to be attractive. Historically, vehicles most targeted by thieves have been Toyota Auris (Hybrid), Toyota Prius, Lexus CT & RX, Honda Jazz, Accord and CR-V.

Hybrids and vehicles with higher ground clearance are often targeted as they’re quicker to access.

CAT. CONVERTER THEFT PREVENTION

Park in a garage or well-lit, busy area where possible

Avoid mounting pavements — it makes access easier

Consider a catalytic converter lock or cage (Sold Secure approved where possible)

Mark your converter with a forensic marking kit

Be alert to grinding or cutting noises, especially late at night

If you believe a theft is taking place call 999 immediately; report suspicious activity via 101
